Special Olympics hosted another successful soccer event at Starfire Sports on May 14, 2011. With 396 athletes and 52 teams participating in traditional 5-a-side, 7-a-side, 5-a-side Unified (combo of special needs athletes and typical mainstream competitors) the athlete’s had a fun-filled day of soccer. Athletes were also able to compete in an individual skills competition, where athletes were tested on their abilities in dribbling, passing, and scoring.
In addition to the standard regional competition, Special Olympics held the first ever Cascadia Championship Series between a select Unified team representing the Seattle Sounders FC who faced off against the Portland Timbers Unified team. Special Olympics teams were invited to join the Sounders FC at their game versus the Portland Timbers later that night at Qwest Field.
A big thank you to the Northshore Kiwanis who provided 450 lunches for all of the athletes, coaches and volunteers!
