Sounders Top FC Dallas in Open Cup Semifinals

The Sounders FC walked away with yet another win in tonight’s US Open Cup Semifinals match against FC Dallas. A fantastic left-footed goal by Fredy Montero in the 40th minute was the first and only goal of the match. A few scares came from FC Dallas late in the game, but the Sounders were able to maintain their lead and clinch the win.

Next up, the Sounders will face the Chicago Fire as they vie for their third straight US Open Cup trophy.

Starfire Sports Serves Kids in Nepal

Starfire Sports recently donated soccer balls and gear to the Hope House orphanage inKathmandu, Nepal.  Working with the University of Notre Dame Center for Social Concerns and college student, Megan Malley, Starfire Sports was able to bring smiles and joy to some very deserving kids through this simple donation of soccer balls and t-shirt jersey’s. 

Providing soccer opportunities is part of what makes Starfire Sports unique and by providing soccer gear to those without is one simple way to achieve this goal.   By offering soccer gear collection sites at Soccer West stores in Factoria and Federal Way, together we are serving kids throughout our community. 

Over the last 5 years, Starfire Sports and Soccer West have collected and distributed thousands of gently worn cleats, shin guards, t-shirt jerseys, shorts, and soccer balls to kids throughout our community and beyond.  Serving kids locally first, we have been able to provide additional equipment donations to youth in Uganda, Somalia, Ghana, Afghanistan, Rwanda, Southern Kenya and other destinations through humanitarian effort and organization who have roots in Seattle. 

If you would like to help with these efforts, please drop off your gently worn soccer gear at any of the Soccer West collection sites or at Starfire Sports.  Thank you, it’s for the kids!

2011 XTREME Cup: Great Soccer & Over $5000 Raised For Water Crisis

The 2011 Starfire XTREME Cup delivered more than just great soccer. This year, the tournament also helped raise awareness among youth soccer players about a crisis that kills more people than all forms of violence, including war. The crisis is the lack of access to clean, safe water, and it affects nearly one billion people.

Along with the soccer champions in our midst over the weekend, we had youth players that were champions of this important global cause. The highest earning team, Stingrays BU15s, collected over $200 and even contributed their own money. Together with participating teams, we were able to raise over $5,000, which is enough to build a well for an entire village. 2011 Shooting Stars Jamobree Recap

On Wednesday, August 10th over 25 teams, ages 6-18 years old joined us for a wonderful 3v3 community soccer jamboree event.  Kids from all walks of life and different levels of experience played in games throughout the day.  Making their way to our raffle, kids looked forward to the chance to win an Xbox 360 Kinect gaming system donated by Microsoft Corporation and autographed Sounders FC gear donated by Sounders FC and many other prizes.

Joined by several local restaurants, everyone was able to sample Mad Pizza, Panera Bread, Old Spaghetti Factory, Buca di Beppo, and Cafe Sienna products.  Washington Youth Soccer and Community Health Care joined us with fun give aways for every child who visited their booth.

Youth Talk Fitness and Diversity with Sounders FC Player

On Wednesday August 17, 2011 Seattle Sounders FC defender Taylor Graham joined the Somali Community Services Coalition (SCSC) and over 25 kids at Starfire Sports for a fun filled fitness and diversity education day.  Taylor Graham spent the afternoon working with the kids from this diverse community on how to achieve fitness through simple soccer skill activities through the “Together We Play” community program. 

The kids were excited to learn from Taylor about diversity and fitness in soccer and join him in an 8v8 soccer scrimmage at the end of the event.

EPD Player Identified from CSC

The Community Schools Collaboration after-school program had a young soccer player identified and invited to join the Washington Youth Soccer Elite Player Development (EPD) program.  Alicia Bennett, Program Director of CSC at Showalter Middle School spoke highly of her team and the young players in the soccer program coached throughout the school year by Starfire Sports staff.  Development in all aspects of child’s life is key and this after-school tutoring program is designed to do just that.  Kids are invited to participate in a variety of outside activities once their homework is completed.  The soccer program partnership at Starfire Sports is one of many programs offered by CSC for middle school students within the Tukwila School District.

Matyes Getachew was invited by Darren Sawatzky, Director of Youth Development with Sounders FC and the EPD program to come out and participate in the NW Invitational program held in late May at the Starfire Sports Campus.  Matyes played with kids a year older and did a great job.  Look for Matyes on the pitch some day!

Sounders Advance to Open Cup Semifinals

Seattle Sounders FC topped the LA Galaxy 3-1 after an exciting match at Starfire Sports. The team came out strong, with goals by Nate Jaqua and Fredy Montero in the first 25 minutes. Lamar Neagle clinched the win with a goal in the 72nd minute on a perfect ball from Alvaro Fernandez.

In the semifinals on August 30th, the Sounders FC will meet FC Dallas on the Starfire pitch. Will the streak continue?
