2012 Sounders FC Cup Recap

Jul 20 By Starfire Sports

The Sounders FC Cup recently took place at Starfire, and the tournament was truly a celebration of soccer in the Seattle area. There was top-level competition on the fields as well as Sounders player appearances, signed merchandise raffles, a Sounders Women game, and a special coaches clinic with members of the Sounders FC coaching staff. While the weekend showcased local talent and the Sounders organization, there was a certain international flair in the final games on Sunday as 13 Canadian teams competed in championship matches! Congratulations and thank you to our neighbors from the north that traveled down and everyone who participated in this year’s tournament!

Sounders best Chivas to advance to US Open Cup Final

Jul 12 By Starfire Sports

What started as a soccer match quickly turned into a battle. In a game dominated by physical play and the referee’s whistle, the Sounders were able to top Chivas USA 4-1 to earn a place in their fourth consecutive US Open Cup Final where they will play Sporting Kansas City, 2-0 winners over the Philadelphia Union tonight. The physicality caused the game to be played at a frantic pace as the teams traded possession and chances on goal. The breakthrough came in the 31st minute when Osvaldo Alonso won the ball in the Sounders half before sending a beautifully timed through ball for Eddie Johnson to finish in a one on one with the Chivas goalkeeper, Dan Kennedy. The 1-0 halftime lead was far from comfortable as the game hung in the balance.

The Sounders then seized control of the game in the first minute of the second half when Fredy Montero was judged to have been fouled in the box and Alonso converted the ensuing penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. Chivas certainly felt the pressure from then on as the Sounders assaulted the goal, but a cruel bit of luck saw a Sounders chance at one end turn into a rebound goal in the 74th minute for Chivas substitute Cesar Romero after a quick counter. The 2-1 scoreline set up an uneasy final fifteen minutes but a goal in the 83rd minute by Brad Evans restored the 2-goal advantage and allowed Sounders fans to breath again. A final goal in the 88th minute by Sammy Ochoa tipped off the celebrations as Sounders fans began chanting “We’re gonna win the US Open Cup! (Again!)” And with the way the Sounders played and finished the game tonight, that is not a bad bet at all.

Women Sounders FC cruise to 5-0 victory over Victoria Highlanders in final home match

Jul 07 By Starfire Sports

The Women Sounders FC played their final home game of the season at Starfire tonight in an exciting 5 goal outburst as they bested the Victoria Highlanders, 5-0. Veronica Perez proved her place as one of the most valuable players on the Sounders this season as she contributed to 4 of the 5 goals, finishing with 2 goals and 2 assists. The Sounders looked dominant from the start as Lindsey Patterson scored twice in the 24th and 27th minute for a 2-goal halftime lead. Any response the Highlanders hoped to have in the second half was crushed by 2 sizzling strikes from Perez, one a thirty yard free kick and the other from twenty yards with her left foot. Megan Manthey put the icing on the cake with an added time goal as the Sounders gave the fans at Starfire a performance to remember on fan appreciation night.

Perez hat-trick lifts Sounders Women past Los Angeles, 4-0

Jun 18 By Starfire Sports

The Sounders Women put in a strong performance as they topped the Los Angeles Strikers 4-0 this evening at Starfire. MVP honors undoubtedly go to hat-trick hero Veronica Perez. She opened the scoring in the first half with a lovely chip over the onrushing Strikers’ goalkeeper. Katie Deines then rose to head home a corner kick, giving the Sounders a 2-0 halftime lead before Perez would complete her trio of goals with two second half strikes. A combination of unpredictable wind and relentless Sounders pressure saw the Strikers play most of the game defending in their own half while Sounders’ goalkeepers  Katie Hultin and  Megan Kufeld combined for the shutout.

PRESS RELEASE: Starfire Sports & Steve Zakuani Partner on Youth Soccer Tournament

Jun 11 By Starfire Sports

Starfire Sports & Steve Zakuani’s Kingdom Hope will inspire youth soccer players to dream big and give big at the 2012 XTREME Cup.

TUKWILA, Wash.—June 11, 2012—The XTREME Cup will see over 1,000 local youth soccer players come out to compete, but the event will touch their lives outside the blows of the whistle. This year, tournament teams will be inspired to live out their soccer dreams, while making opportunities for others to do the same.

“Starfire Sports and Kingdom Hope believe that soccer can change the lives of those who play it, and think it is important that anyone who has the desire to play should not be limited by means or lack of support,” said Teddy Mitalas, Starfire Sports Director of Business Development and Tournaments “We are excited to partner with an organization that is founded on these same principals, and can help us share those ideals with these players.”

Seattle Sounders FC midfielder Steve Zakuani founded Kingdom Hope in an effort to extend the support system that allowed him to believe in himself and achieve the dream he is living today. “It is my passion in life to help as many people as I can realize their dreams the way that I have, and inspire them to become great achievers in all areas of life,” Zakuani, said. “Partnering with Starfire Sports on the XTREME Cup will allow me to encourage local youth to realize their dreams as soccer players, but also help them grow as leaders and community members.”

During the tournament Zakuani will talk with tournament participants about his inspirational journey in the sport of soccer. Other members of the Sounders FC squad will join him to sign autographs and interact with attendees. Tournament teams will also work together, creating opportunities for others to actualize their soccer dreams, through fundraising efforts supporting Kingdom Hope’s programming and scholarship funds.

Through the event, Starfire Sports and Kingdom Hope plan to impact over one hundred and fifty kids next year by funding Kingdom Hope clinics and sponsorships.

Starfire will provide all teams that register for the XTREME Cup the tools to get players and their family members involved in the fundraising process. Every team that holds a fundraiser will receive recognition at the tournament, and prizes will be awarded to teams that raise the most. In addition to the team fundraising, Starfire Sports will donate $50 for every team that registers.

For registration and additional information about the XTREME Cup, visit www.starfiresports.com.
