SPSL powered by adidas: Championships Recap
The fall session of SPSL powered by adidas saw intense competition in both the Premier and First Divisions. For much of the season, the brackets were tight keeping the playoffs picture murky throughout.
By week 7, the top teams began pulling away from the competition, but as playoffs approached the teams who would secure the remaining spots remained in question. In week 9, the spread between 3rd and 6th was only 3 points in the Premier Division and the First Division saw a three-way tie for 2nd between Deportivo Italia-Series B, Nomads and Seattle East.
The fourth Premier Division playoff contender would not be decided until the day of the semifinals match. Dinamo and Lagers faced off in two 25-minute halves in an effort to clinch 4th place. Lagers would secure a 3-1 win over Dinamo and go on to upset the bracket leaders, Three Lions, to advance to the finals. The semifinals for the First Division saw another significant upset when Seattle East topped the undefeated front-runners, Westside United, 2-1.
In the finals of the Premier Division the Lagers opened up scoring, but Deportivo Italia tied things up with a successful penalty kick by Luiggi Montero. It was the first of many goals for the squad, who went on to take the championship with a 5-1 win.
The First Division final saw Seattle East and Nomads battling it out in a tight match. Seattle East held a 2-1 lead as regulation time was winding down, but Nomads tied things up with this great goal in the final minutes to send the match into overtime. In overtime Nomads found themselves playing a man down and Seattle East was able to capitalize on the advantage, winning the finals 3-2.
